THE BLADE

Rotary Club of Bladensburg, Maryland

Vol. 50, No. 38 March 20, 2008

THIS WEEK'S MEETING:

This will be a regular meeting - at Woodmore, at the usual time.   But as to the March 27th meeting, watch this space and listen for Eolia’s announcement at this week’s meeting.

Jeffrey Swilley, Deputy Director of the Workforce Investment Board for Prince George's County, will speak. Did you know we had a Workforce Investment Board? Come find out what it does. (3/20)

Next Week: Our only evening meeting this month will be Charter Night, the 29th cocktails at 6, with dinner served at 6:45 at the Course at Andrews AFB.  You enter through the Virginia (back) gate and hang a left.

There’ll be music and dancing along with food and Rotary.  If you didn’t sign up on the sheet circulated at the last meeting, please let President Eolia how many guests you will have.

LAST WEEK'S MEETING

President to-be Judy opened the meeting Beyhan led us in prayer and Sydney led the Pledge of Allegiance.  March High Sheriff John (Andy Taylor) Wilkerson employed Mary (Barney Fife) Dudley as his deputy and shook down each table in its turn.  With St. Paddy’s Day on the near horizon, Sheriff John auctioned off a beautiful pewter crab paperweight which Peggy Magee was determined to win.  Or was it a St. Pat’s Day Rotary Broche.  Or both?  Never one to gloat, she sends her warm appreciation to all the other bidders whose well-timed bids enabled Peggy to participate in the auction at a higher level than she anticipated.  Well done!

Ramblin’ Bob Grill let us in on Debra Maier’s available-to-rent Ocean City Condo (call 410-353-2160 to make arrangements) and Bob also informed us of our invitation to attend Gallaudet Day on March 25th  or 26th  at 10:30 a.m. during which the Rotary scholarship honoring  John Moore and Ollie Zinmeister will be presented.  Check the date to make sure then let President Eolia know if you plan to attend.  The cost is $30.

Helen Svensen of the Greenbelt Club brought a personal invitation to every member to join that Rotary club for its March 26th fundraiser blowout at the Marriot on Ivy Lane.  Cocktails at 6:30, dinner at 7:30 $55 pp, call Steve Kemp for tickets at 301-464-0400.

Mary Dudley clued us on the way to enter and to update the District’s database.  You’ll need your member number which she will provide on request.  Email her at mdudley@dchweb.org to find out.

GUESTS

Our guests included Joe Mahann, a WWII vet who worked many years for NASA, accompanying Jan Kalshoven and Greg Tavarotozzo,  owner of Silhouette Photography and Imaging, whose trajectory in Bladensburg Elementary, Junior High, High School suggest that he may culminate by matriculation through the Rotary Club of Bladensburg(?).  And that’s not all; Dr. Bill Duboyce’s guest was nurse and writer Pat Ballish who revealed her intention to become a full-fledged member.

John Moore was recovering from a bruising battle with a giant; we’re glad John won and wish him a speedy recovery!
